The best beach side dining experience!

Walking into Sugar Beach is a very surreal experience. Personally I felt like I was teleported to a beachside cafe down south and it was hard to believe that I was still within the borders of Colombo. This beachside restaurant has a very authentic touch to itself with hanging plants, cozy lounge chairs, couches and tables by the shore. I felt right at home and even took off my shoes to walk on the sand! The ambience is amazing especially if you’re looking for good food and a casual place to chill. The service is exceptional and the employees are very friendly and eager to cater to your needs!

Drinks

Beetroot, Carrot, Celery & Ginger – LKR 650

We weren’t really sure what we were expecting with this drink, but we decided to be a little adventurous. Arriving to the table, red as blood, this drink looked appetizing to the eyes but not so much to our taste buds (but that’s just our opinion). This drink tasted like a juice cleanse -a little bland with a hint of salt- than a drink to be honest. However I did like the Ginger undertone, but maybe this drink is more for fitness/health enthusiasts than a commoner. Also if you leave your drink unattended for a while, you see it segment to layers with water on the bottom, and everything else on top.

Gotukola & Green Apple – LKR 500

I had higher expectations for this drink than the previous one because I felt like gotukola and green apple would be a bomb-ass combo! Although this drink would also segment into layers, it was much better than the first one. It was quite refreshing and both elements of gotukola and green apple blended in perfectly.

 Verdita – LKR 1400

Green Chillies in a drink, anyone?

The Verdita is Tequila’s best friend and you have to be a little daring to try this drink out! It had a very tangy flavor (which I assumed was either pineapple or passion flavoring) and had a little bit of pepper to clear your airways out. Definitely something to “spice” your night up.

Spiced Pineapple Bellini – LKR 1400

Bring out more alcohol! This drink consisted of sparkling wine, mint leaves and chili powder and gave off a very spicy undertone. I found it very interesting because it tastes like achcharu with a little bit of bubbly! It was slightly tangy, spicy, and definitely a little eccentric to be sipping by the side of the beach.

Food

The drinks didn’t impress me as much as the food did and let me tell you why! The dishes down at Sugar Beach are some of the most appetizing, fresh and delectable dishes you get for the price you pay!

Appetizers

Grilled King Prawns – LKR 1000

This dish consisted of massive prawns, a side of lettuce and dollops of mayo. The prawns were seasoned well; slightly spicy and a great way to build up your appetite. A little pricy for the portion size though, I’d say.

Tuna Poke San Choy Bao – LKR 900

Now this is an appetizer! What more than some Tuna Sashimi to work its way through your stomach (and your heart)! Sugar Beach was very gracious with the quantity and salad topping complemented the flavor of the tuna meat. Very delicious, worth the price, and worth the try!

Mains

Breaking Crab – LKR 1650

This dish consisted of a burger with a soft shell crab, crispy fries and the best wasabi mayo I’ve tasted in a while! The burger is massive and takes some effort to fit the entire thing in for one bite! The textures in this burger are crazy, from the soft bun to the crunchy soft shell crab, ending with some delicious coleslaw on the bottom. Paired with the wasabi mayo, this dish was incredible! Walter White would definitely approve!

Dirty Bird – LKR 1100

This dish was said to be a highly demanded burger at Sugar Beach and we could see why. Consisting of a succulent patty, cheese, pickles and coleslaw, paired with crispy fries and a spicy, red, mayo sauce, I was in heaven. This dish has a lot more going on than the Breaking Crab and we’d totally recommend it!

Fish & Chips – LKR 1350

How can you go to a beach and not order yourself a portion of fish and chips? If you’re someone who likes to stay on the safe side and get your money’s worth for what you expect, this dish is for you. The fish was cooked incredibly well with a very crispy outer layer as well. Incredibly filling and delectable!

Prawn Star – LKR 1400

The star that stole the show! This pizza is a great dish to share with your friends by the side of the beach. It also comes with special chili oil (if you like it spicy), with which you should proceed with extra caution and not over pour! Thin crust bread topped off with cheese, green chili and succulent prawns; this pizza is the way to go. Definitely worth a try!

Dessert

Panna Cotta with Lychee Crumble – LKR 650

Boy oh boy, could I not wait for dessert! This beautiful item was like heaven in a cup! The panna cotta was extremely smooth and the crumble was amazing! It was sweet and the lychee gave a whole other tangy feel to it. All in all, the components blended so well that I’d definitely go back for more!

Housemade Churros with Chocolate Dip – LKR 500

Although it said chocolate dip, the churros came with a strawberry dip as well. Let me just start off by saying BEST. CHURROS. EVER.

These churros came to the table warm, fresh and bigger than the usual churros I’ve had a go at. Laced with sugar, they were so fresh you could even have them without the dips! So good!

All in all, Sugar Beach is the ultimate place to go chill with at your friends, significant other or even alone, if solo is the way you go! Delicious food, great ambiance, and friendly faces all over.

Tip: Save room for dessert!.
