What we had
Dishes from the East or the Peninsula, they’ve got it all.
Eastern Wok has been gracing Walukarama Road’s food scene for some time now and we were eager to try them out. Their menu boasts a variety of dishes from 3 strikingly varied cuisines: Chinese, Arabic, and Indian. We heard they do their Chinese dishes the best, but we quite liked their Arabic too. Their portion sizes are pretty big so we thought that they’d be the perfect spot for a boozy dinner on a budget. Unfortunately, they don’t serve booze nor are they BYOB.
Chocolate Milkshake – LKR 400
There really wasn’t anything amazing about the Chocolate Milkshake. It was a little too sweet for my liking but wasn’t a terrible pick for LKR 400.
Mango Lassi – LKR 380
The Mango Lassi also fell short in terms of being true to its nature. The curd was a little heavy and I could distinctly taste it; which in turn overpowered the taste of mango.
Lime Mint – LKR 460
Out of the 3 drinks we tried that night, the Lime Mint was the better choice. This drink was refreshing and light.
Thai Style Drumlets – LKR 490
These drumlets were far from your average crispy chicken munchies. This was almost like a dish of deviled chicken with drumlets, bathed in a thick sauce.
Batter Fried Prawns – LKR 1270
This dish is huge, and completely worth the buck in terms of serving size. But, in terms of taste and flavor, the dish really falls short. The prawns were soggy, the batter around the prawn was too thick and grainy, and the prawns were not fried till crisp. To add to this, the batter that clothed the prawns was bland too, the dish really lacked flavor as it seemed like the prawns were not marinated well beforehand either.
Chicken and Sweetcorn Soup – LKR 390 (small portion)
I always love me some Chicken and Sweetcorn Soup and I was very happy with the one at Eastern Wok. The soup was thick, there was ample corn and chicken and, the taste and smell of the soup was a big gastronomical plus!
Tom-Yum Seafood Soup – LKR 490 (small portion)
Their Tom-Yum soup was a clear winner as well. The soup was loaded with squid, chicken, prawns, and button mushrooms. The broth was spicy and was a good rendition of a classic Tom-Yum.
Crispy Garupa in Hot Garlic Sauce – LKR 490 per 100g
The Crispy Garupa was an interesting plate of food. It wasn’t the usual baked fish as the garupa’s outer skin seemed oil fried. I didn’t love it because I felt like it was too oily and too crisp. They also need to focus on de-boning the meat a little more. The fish that was served to us was filled with little bones and sharp fins that we had to keep picking out of our bites while we ate.
Eastern Wok Special Mixed Fried Rice – LKR 1030
For LKR 1030, this fried rice is easily enough for 3 people. The Mixed Rice is also loaded with beef, prawns and chicken. Well worth the price.
Deep Fried Cuttlefish in Hot Butter Sauce – LKR 1190
I am a huge HBC enthusiast and if I ever see it on a menu, I will order it. The Hot Butter Cuttlefish at Eastern Wok was nice, but not the usual my taste buds are accustomed to. The cuttlefish was actually tossed in tomatoey-chilli-garlic sauce that caused the fried cuttlefish to get soggy after a while.
Mixed Grill Platter – LKR 2750
I would definitely go back for this Mixed Grill Platter. Although the price was too steep, this dish was the best out of everything we had that day. The Mixed Grill Platter consists of chicken two ways, mutton, and beef. It also comes with buttery pita bread, minus the hummus. The meat was cooked well, it was smokey and juicy, and the chicken tikka was the most delicious of the lot. That being said, for almost 3000 bucks, there was barely enough meat for this dish to act as a main for 2 people.
Assorted Vegetables with Cashew Nuts – LKR 930
This was your classic chop suey with the addition of cashew nuts. To be honest, I didn’t love the assorted vegetables as the sauce was a little off for my liking.
Diced Chicken in Red Chili Cashew Nut – LKR 1230
The Diced Chicken is also well worth your money as this plate feeds 3 people at least. There wasn’t anything about this dish that blew me away, but it’s well worth your money.
Tip – The Chicken Tikka in the Mixed Grill Platter is delicious, so be sure to try it out.
