Seeni Sambol (Sweet Onion Relish) Recipe

An all-time favourite of every Sri Lankan, make this delicious Seeni Sambol for dinner tonight with some Roast Paan! Get cooking!


  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Large Onions 500 g
  • Curry Leaves & Rampa
  • Chilli Flakes 2 ½ tbsp.
  • Pepper 1 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder ½ tsp
  • Green Chilli 2 Nos.
  • Maldives Fish 2 tbsp
  • Sugar 2 tbsp
  • Cinnamon 1 inch
  • Salt 2 tbsp
  • Tamarind Juice 2 tsp
  • Cloves 2 Nos.
  • Cardamom 2 Nos.


  1. Heat oil & add large onions, curry leaves, rampa, chilli flakes, pepper, turmeric powder, green chillies, maldives fish, sugar, cinnamon stick, salt & tamarind juice.
  2. Mix well and allow to cook for 5 minutes. 
  3. Add cloves & ground cardamom. Mix well & cook in low heat, covered for 20 minutes.
  4. Enjoy it with some hot hot Kade Paan!
