Hot Butter Cuttlefish

A Sri Lankan favourite; here’s how you can try it at home!


  • Cuttlefish 500g
  • Pepper 1 tsp
  • Onion 1 large
  • Salt 1 tsp
  • Egg white 1
  • Cornflour
  • Butter 75g
  • Dry Chili 4
  • Chili Paste 1 tbsp
  • Garlic 4 cloves
  • Soy Sauce 1 tbsp
  • Sugar ½ tsp
  • Sesame oil ½ tsp
  • Spring Onions or Onion Leaves
  • Oil for Frying



  1. Clean and cut cuttlefish
  2. Add salt and pepper and mix well
  3. Add egg white to the cuttlefish
  4. Fold in cornflour and fry in oil until golden brown
  5. Heat pan and add butter, dry chili cut into pieces, chili paste, garlic, soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil and onion leaves and mix all together
  6. Add the fried cuttlefish
  7. Garnish with onion leaves and serve
