Life Saving Tips During Floods

2017 Jun 1

The monsoon season is back, and Sri Lanka is once again experiencing disastrous floods which have wreaked havoc across the country. Approximately 202 people have lost their lives, and countless others have been injured and displaced from their homes. This year, the danger has swept across more districts than ever, and millions are endangered. Since flood warnings have been issued across various regions in the island, it’s important to know how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. As such, we have listed important tips below which may help you during a flood crisis.

  • If a flood warning has been issued in your area, do not take it lightly. Several houses have reported complete submersion of their ground floors and it’s possible that you could be stranded, too. Immediately prepare an emergency kit, with supplies of clean water, food, medicine, flashlights, and charged cellphones. Simply being prepared can ensure that you stay safe.

  • Immediately disconnect all electrical appliances, especially anything which might come into contact with floodwater. If you are stranded outside, do your best to avoid any fallen electrical lines.

  • Move to higher ground immediately if you are unable to evacuate. Immediately evacuate the ground floor and move to higher ground. If you are in your home, clear the ground floor of any appliances and large items.

  • Refrain from walking or swimming through moving water as you could get carried away if the current is strong. If you do have to walk through still water, use a stick to check the firmness of the ground and tread very carefully.

  • Most importantly, do not attempt to drive through a flood! If water levels are rising, abandon your car and move to higher ground, even if you have to escape through the window. Your car could quite easily float away, even in a foot of moving water. Keep in mind that roads are weakened and collapsible even after water levels have receded.

  • Remember that in floods heavy objects, vehicles, and uprooted trees acts as dangerous obstacles. On the other hand, if you have no options, try to grab onto a steady heavy object which may transport you to higher ground.

  • The dangers of a flood are not over once the water recedes. If possible, attempt to disinfect and ensure that you only drink clean, bottled water. If you are entering your home or another building after the flood, check for gas leaks, ventilate the house, and examine any walls which looks collapsible. The chances of contracting dengue are high after a flood, so take the necessary measures to stay safe. Also, make sure to keep a look out for dangerous animals like water snakes and crocodiles, as there have been many findings of such creatures in flooded homes.

Most importantly, remember to keep track of the news and stay updated.
