Off the Page – Jodi Picoult & Samantha Van Leer

2018 Jul 28

Meet Oliver, a prince literally taken from the pages of a fairytale and transported into the real world. Meet Delilah, the girl who wished Oliver into being. It’s a miracle that everything seems perfect at first – but there are complications. To exist in Delilah’s world, Oliver must take the place of a regular boy. Enter Edgar, who agrees to play Oliver’s role in the pages of Delilah’s favourite book. But just when it seems that the plan will work, everything gets turned upside down. In this multilayered universe, the line between what’s on the page and what’s possible is blurred. Is there a way for everyone to live happily ever after?

A fairytale unlike anything you’ve read before. A collaborative work between Jodi Picoult and her daughter, Samantha Van Leer, Off the Page is both a standalone novel and a sequel to Between the Lines, which sets the stage for this second book. If you’re looking to escape from reality for a while and get some magic back into your life, Off the Page is a great read. Simple, captivating, and well-written, it will transport you into a different world.

Although this makes for a great simple read, the multilayered universe within the pages of Delilah’s book can be rather confusing. The imagery painted is undoubtedly amazing, yet the novel would have been improved had the rules behind this universe been clearer. Nonetheless, it is certainly unique and miles apart from anything you might have read before. The book will definitely tug at your heartstrings, and quite surprisingly doesn’t stick to being a story where nothing serious or drastic takes place (expect a few shocks here!). Off the Page is great for a short, magical read to escape from your everyday life!
