Paige has only a few vivid memories of her mother, who abandoned her when she was five.
Now, having left home and her father for dreams of art school and marriage to an ambitious young doctor, Paige finds herself with a child of her own.
Emotionally and physically exhausted, overwhelmed by the demands of her family, Paige cannot forget her mother’s absence or the shameful memories from her own past. Wit doubts about her maternal ability creeping into her mind, Paige considers the unthinkable: is it possible her baby would be better off without her?
You love your baby, but you can’t cope with being a mother. What would you do?
This is the story of a woman who ran away from home after making a life altering decision; the story of how she met a young surgeon and fell in love, not knowing what her future would be like. After being married for seven years, juggling two jobs to help pay off her husband’s student loans, and having their relationship strained from his late hours at the hospital, their world is turned upside down when Paige learns she is expecting. After her mother walked out on her when she was a child, she didn’t think she had a good reason to believe that she herself could be a good mother to the baby she didn’t expect to have.
Motherhood is no easy feat. While it can be the ultimate blessing and bring you love and joy like nothing else, it is not without its trials and tribulations. Your life changes before and after the birth of your child in ways that may be incomprehensible. Your body will be different, your sleep schedules will never be the same, but in the end the love you have for your child will trump all of it.
Although this novel is centered around just two characters unlike some of her other books, Jodi Picoult depicts this story of motherhood, love and hardship, along with a touch of drama, and as every other novel of hers, it is a page turner.
