The A.B.C. Murders – Agatha Christie

2017 Sep 9

There’s a serial killer on the loose, bent on working his way through the alphabet. And as a macabre calling card he leaves beside each victim’s corpse the ABC Railway Guide open at the name of the town where the murder has taken place. Having begun with Andover, Bexhill and then Churston, there seems little chance of the murderer being caught – until he makes the crucial and vain mistake of challenging Hercule Poirot to frustrate his plans.

Arguably one of Agatha Christie’s most popular novels, ‘The A.B.C. Murders’ is the 13th Hercule Poirot mystery. As with all of her stories, it is filled with suspense, drama, and a plot twist that you will never see coming. Throughout the novel, her clever manner of storytelling masterfully disguises the truth behind the mystery. Certainly, the ending cannot be guessed until the very last few pages.

Poirot’s charming, comical, and furtive manner of solving mysteries is certainly enjoyable as always. However, in this particular novel, the nature of the crime is rather different. Instead of the investigation of a conventional single murder, the serial murders certainly add a twist to the story. Poirot’s methods change and the use of the psychology behind the criminal is highly interesting. ‘The A.B.C. Murders’ is a classic Agatha Christie novel – one which you will not be able to put down.
