Generating from diverse cultures and countries, numerous foods have taken their toll worldwide. Gelato which first started in Italy has gone haywire far and wide. Shawarma, which is an Arabic street food, is not uncommon either. We Lankans have given it our own cultural twist as well and many of you may know, the “Nana” shops and several other “petti kadès” make these delicacies rich with our spices. It’s not quite the same as an authentic Arabic shawarma, but it still tastes delicious (and is also pretty cheap!).

Well, the most recent food prodigy is Rolled Ice Cream! Also known as stir fried or “ice pan” ice cream, rolled ice cream made its debut on the streets of Thailand. It looks pretty easy to make and takes up to 10 or 15 seconds for the entire making of the concoction.
Here’s how it works. A pan, frozen to a temperature of -35˚C, plays a wildly important role when making this tidbit. Creamy milk is poured onto the pan and with the use of two metal spatulas pieces of fruit, chocolate or munchies, like Oreos, are mixed into the milk and the blend is spread out flat on the pan. The spatulas scrape the chilled cream into rolls, an ample amount is popped into a cup or cone and Voila! We have a fantabulous serving of Ice Pan Ice Cream!

The USA is reeling over the introduction of rolled ice cream as more than a few shops and vendors are beginning to add these amazing desserts to their menus together with new ventures popping up dedicating themselves to brewing up stir fried ice cream. The most famous is a boutique in The Big Apple called 10Below Ice cream and is apparently the first enterprise to serve the Thai-inspired rolls in NYC. These aficionados have dished up some eccentric concoctions and to name a few, we have Strawberry Shawty, Cookie Monster, Peanut Butter and Jealous and Monkey Business (To Whom It May Concern at 10Below, please go international and start a venture here in Lanka. We need you. Thank you).

Social media is being plastered with videos and images of rolled ice cream, and in all honesty, the mere sight of it is mouth watering and if you’re a foodie, you’ll definitely be yearning to try this out. Unfortunately, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean doesn’t have rolled ice cream as of yet and that is real downer. I will remain convinced that I’m not the only one awaiting the arrival of Ice Pan Ice Cream and hopefully, my wish shall be granted.
