2017 Dec 11
It’s December and you know what that means –we’re about to exploit the bejeezus out of Christmas. From Christmas trees at every roundabout to Carols playing in every major department store in Colombo, the celebrations have already begun, so what’s stopping you from Ho-ho-hopping on the North Pole bound train? Make your abode merrier and join in the spirit of the season!
There are a bunch of regular stores you could walk into and grab lots of tinsel, mistletoe and holly wreaths. Apart from adventuring through the malls of Colombo like Liberty Plaza and Majestic City that are sure to have lots of shops you can get your décor from, here are some of the more reliable places to grab your stash.
What they have: This place has always been a go-to when it comes to fresh bouquets and even though the perception is that it is expensive, their stuff is fully worth your money. We swung by their Atelier in Bambalapitiya and they had beautiful dried flower wreaths to hang on your front door this season. Definitely a change-up from the ordinary. They also do custom-made things on request so be sure to swing by one of their many outlets and have a chat with one of their assistants to get yourself a fresh flower tree topper or even some pretty center pieces for your Christmas table.
What they have: Albeit on the pricier side, Odel usually has a good collection of stuff to choose from. The outer appearance of the store this year already indicates that they’re planning big things for us this season, so Odel is a pretty safe bet if you want a one-stop-shop for your stuff. From baubles to tinsel to tree toppers, you’ll find everything you need to adorn your trees and your banisters here
4. Paradise Road
What they have: Very local, unique and a little abstract, Paradise Road knows the Sri Lankan market. It is of course, pretty upscale, so if you have some money to spare this month you can definitely go crazy, but you can pick up some unusual things from this quaint place so I wouldn’t dismiss the option so fast. Pictured above is their alternative to the traditional candle which burns with a larger flame and never melts! They also have things like miniature choir rope trees and other unusual little trinkets.
5. Havelock Road
Where it is: Havelock Road, Colombo 5
What they have: Fresh Christmas trees or fir trees usually get set up for sale somewhere in the first or second week of December and you can find quite a few vendors lining up their stock on the pavements of Havelock Road – the same place they set up their stalls during Jambu season. There’s quite a large variety to choose from with regards to sizes and prices so swing by and take your pick.
6. House of Fashions
What they have: Home to a range of different things, from winter coats to swimming suits, House of Fashions in Borella is a safe bet to get all your Christmas décor shopping done as well. Deck the halls with boughs of easily affordable but very plastic trinkets like tinsel, string lights and miniature statues to add to your crib – find it all here!
Where it is: 62, Hyde Park Corner, Colombo 02/338, Galle Rd, Wellawatte, Colombo 06/47, Galle Rd, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia and more!
What they have: If you want things on the lower end of the price spectrum but don’t want to go out of your way for them, Arpico outlets are convenient and have a lot of the usual stuff that people need. Swing by the Union Place branch for a wider range to choose from and you can go home with glass ball ornaments, a manger, Christmas tree decorations, wreaths, tinsel, and anything else you desire!
What they have: To anyone who’s trying to go all out this year and buy a lot of Christmas décor on a tight budget, Pettah is the place to be! China Street is chock-a-block full of tinsel and you won’t be able to walk 5 feet without buying something or the other. If you’re willing to go the distance, you will find everything from ornaments to wreaths, but a piece of advice, do arm yourself with some skillful bargaining phrases to ensure that you strike the best deals possible. During the holiday season you can also find a selection of wreaths and poinsettias in a variety of sizes costing between Rs. 35 – Rs. 80 per flower at Titus stores on main street.
And last but not least, you still have plenty of time to pitch in that online order before the real season in December begins. Places like www.mydeal.lk and www.wow.lk are local so delivery time will be faster, but if you have some patience, www.alibaba.com is the real place to be at because their options are endless with Christmas décor this time, and will be cheaper too since they mostly sell in bulk.
