Sri Lanka is well known for its long sandy beaches, beautiful hill country, and one of a kind culture. While there are many beautiful sights like the Galle Fort, and the unique architecture of the Dutch Hospital to see, something that always catches the eye are the kites that fly high at Galle Face Green. Snake shaped kites with astoundingly long tails, large kites that are probably as large as the average grown man, kites that are so small that they’re barely a blip against the bright blue sky; it’s a collection of the simplest things that make up such a beautiful sight.

Last year, when the Derana Lokaya Saha Lokayo Kite Festival took place at Galle Face, thousands of people gathered together at the event and over a hundred kites of all shapes, sizes and colours filled the sky! It really was a spectacular sight to witness.

This year, the kite festival will occur on a much larger scale with 16 contestants from Morocco, France, Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, South Korea, Thailand, China and the Czech Republic taking part! They will be a part of the competition for the most creative kite, and from what we’ve seen so far, they sure don’t lack creativity and aren’t afraid to think outside the box. For that matter, even our local community displayed some exquisite talent at the festival last year!

There will be 6 categories for the local community to compete in and this includes The Most Creative Kite, The Most Colourful Kite, The Biggest Kite, The Smallest Kite, The Lokaya Saha Lokayo Logo Kite and an Under 15 Category. Participants will also receive a certificate of participation.
The competition will commence at 10 in the morning on Saturday, 19th of August 2017 and the area will be open to the public from 1 pm to 9 pm. You can spend this Saturday at this carnival-like festival, enjoy good music and take part in other fun activities and games. Additionally, there will also be a musical show in the evening.

So be there this Saturday and be a part of the biggest Kite Festival Sri Lanka has ever seen!
