2017 Oct 6
The Big Bad Wolf is a Malaysian based book sale that’s taken South East Asia by storm with their crazy offers and unique theme. This October, they’ve finally made their way down to Sunny Sri Lanka and here’s why you absolutely cannot miss out on it!
1. They’ve Got Mad Discounts
The Wolf prides itself on being one of the biggest book sales that hosts some of the best deals in the world. They have discounts from 60% – 70% and it’s every book hoarder’s paradise! You can snatch high quality hard cover novels for as low as Rs. 600 and I’m not even kidding when I say you can get a hard cover version of The Complete Works of Shakespeare for Rs. 950 and everyone knows that’s a steal! If that ain’t the most convincing reason to give them a visit, I don’t know what is!
2. Nostalgic Moments
The sale was initially aimed at kids and younger audiences to encourage reading, so they host a huge number of titles by authors from our childhoods including the likes of Enid Blyton and Judy Blume. You’ll be taken on a roller coaster of emotions as you peruse the pages of The Famous Five and The Faraway Tree and will definitely buy a couple just for old time’s sake.
Also look out for golden finds like Silkword by Robert Galbraith, which is J K Rowling’s pseudonym and your one way ticket to reminiscence!
3. There’s something for everyone!
They don’t just sell novels, they also have biographies, cook books, colouring books, sports books, self help guides and everything in between! They claim to have 1.5 million books on sale covering 20,000 high end English titles from all genres so you know there’s some golden nuggets in there for everyone.
4. It’s open 24/7!
This is one of the most unique aspects of The Wolf! Starting from 9am on the 5th of October, the sale will continue all the way to 11.59pm on the 15th of October non-stop. That’s 255 hours of book shopping with no breaks! So if you’re afraid of the hoards of people or getting stuck in school rush, there’s no worry – you can swing by at 3am for all your bibliophilic needs!
5. Food to energize for more book shopping

There’s a bunch of food stalls outside from ice cream to hotdogs to short eats so should you ever tire of all that book shopping, you know you can grab some grub and swing straight back into the game! One can spend an entire day here, eating, bonding over books, and browsing the massive number of novels available, so do make a day out of it!
6. It’s a good cause
The Wolf hosts only English titles and was initiated in countries whose first language isn’t English for great reasons. The enormous discounts are basically an initiative to boost English literacy rates globally and make popular titles available to people who can’t afford to bust about 2000 bucks on a book. If you, as a well-earning, middle class Sri Lankan go and purchase a few novels from this book sale, you’re helping The Wolf expand its reach into more and more countries at more and more frequent intervals. So you’re not just expanding your horizons, you’re also helping someone less privileged read.
So there you have it folks, 6 unbeatable, great reasons to be at The Big Bad Wolf! Head on down to the SLECC anytime between the 5th and 15th of October for an experience you definitely won’t regret!
