Mystery books can be termed the bread and butter of fiction novels worldwide. In this list, we have shortlisted some of the 10 best mystery novels of all time, to be read at least once in your lifetime! With various authors, writing styles, murders, and crime, these are books which set the stage for mystery fiction and books which upheld that wonderful legacy.

 

  1. The Hound of the Baskervilles – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

While each of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s mysteries starring Sherlock Holmes deserves to be on this list, ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ stands out. Although adapted into many different versions, the original story surrounding the legend of the devil-beast which haunts the moors of the Baskervilles’ family home is yet terrifying and intriguing.

  1. Murder on the Orient Express – Agatha Christie

The queen of crime novels, Agatha Christie has penned numerous exciting and bewildering mysteries. Undoubtedly, the most popular is ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, a Hercule Poirot Mystery. The brilliant detective is put to the task of solving a murder aboard one of the world’s most luxurious passenger trains.

  1. Rebecca – Daphne du Maurier

A thrilling, terrifying, and mysterious novel centering on Mrs. Maxim de Winter, a sudden proposal of marriage, and  a suspicious lingering evil cast by the shadow of Rebecca, Mr. Maxim de Winter’s first wife. A riveting tale of fear, suspicion, love and murder, ‘Rebecca’ is a page-turner.

  1. Sharp Objects – Gillian Flynn

The famous ‘Gone girl’ is most certainly not Gillian Flynn’s only mystery novel. Apart from ‘Dark Places’, this novel is a thrilling psychological puzzle which is unveiled upon the death of two pre-teen girls. Flynn has penned a dark, twisted, and ultimately terrifying, yet enjoyable book.

  1. The Maltese Falcon – Dashiell Hammett

This award-winning novel centers on private detective Sam Spade who is hired to track down Floyd Thursby. When Spade’s partner Miles Archer is shot while on Thursby’s trail, Spade finds himself both hunter and hunted, having to track down a treasure and the jewel-encrusted bird before being caught himself. ‘The Maltese Falcon’ is a gripping thriller.

  1. The Moonstone – Wilkie Collins

Generally considered the first full length detective novel in the English language, ‘The Moonstone’ is about the theft of an enormous diamond stolen from an Indian shrine. With a wild and interesting mix of characters, this book has it all – romance, theft and murder. Along with this particular novel, ‘The Woman in White’ was also considered as some of Collins’ best work.

  1. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Stieg Larsson

This widely popular novel was the first of a riveting series, which was then adapted on the big screen as well. Murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue combine into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel. The mystery, suspense, and captivating characters will keep you reading till the end.

  1. The Da Vinci Code – Dan Brown

This immensely popular book and film adaptation is considered Dan Brown’s best work. Although his Robert Langdon novel experienced major controversy and some backlash, millions of readers were enthralled by this high speed chase across Paris and England, in order to solve clues from what is seemingly the world’s largest treasure hunt to uncover a deep secret which may be lost forever. With a number of shocking twists and turns, ‘The Da Vinci Code’ does not fail to entertain.

  1. The Name of the Rose – Umberto Eco

Set in the year 1327 in Italy, where Franciscans are being suspected of heresy, Brother William of Baskerville begins to investigate. When seven bizarre deaths occur, he collects evidence, deciphers secret symbols and coded manuscripts, and digs into the eerie labyrinth of the abbey, using only his wit, logic, wry humor and extreme curiosity.

  1. An Unsuitable Job for a Woman – P. D. James

This is the debut novel which introduces P. D. James’ young and badass female detective, Cordelia Gray. When handsome Cambridge dropout Mark Callender dies hanging by the neck with a faint trace of lipstick on his mouth and the official verdict is suicide, his wealthy father hires fledgling private investigator Cordelia Gray to find out what led him to self-destruction. What she discovers instead is a twisting trail of secrets and sins, and the strong scent of murder.
