What we had
Cakes, Bakes & More!
Colombo is miles far from lacking a number of places to grab a good bite or two to eat, or a soothing drink to relax your day. Cakes & Bakes is a fairly new eatery that opened in Bambalapitiya. They started with the bakery downstairs, which proved to be quite successful, and have now progressed to opening up a café upstairs.
This café is a well-lit, well-furnished spot and definitely ticks the comfortable box. Their menu, though somewhat basic, is incredibly extensive.
Mixed Berry Lavish – Rs. 650
The shake was extremely lush and was an absolute delight to taste. The berries in the drink are prominent and leave a distinct yoghurt-like taste on your taste buds, and this somehow makes you want to keeping drinking more and more! All in all, a great drink!
Hummus with Pita Bread – Rs. 420
Hummus, I’ve heard, is a healthy snack to munch on because it’s usually primarily made from mashed chickpeas and a few other healthy ingredients. I would have this hummus everyday if I could! It tasted absolutely delicious. The consistency and texture of the paste was just right and it wasn’t overloaded with olive oil. The only downer here was the fact that the pita bread was quite hard and was sometimes a bit difficult to chew on.
Chicken Burger – Rs.520
The burger was served with a side of fries, a little bowl of ketchup and a serving of salad. The fries were a bit too oily for my liking. The salad was fresh and the generous serving of black olives was absolutely welcome!
Moving onto the burger itself, I can safely say it is probably one of the best burgers I have had in a while. It is not your average fast food burger and is thankfully not drenched in oil. The burger patties appeared to be packed with herbs and the burger also had egg, mushroom and cheese. The patties were absolute perfection. The herbs and the meat combined together so well and it broke away with so much ease. It was definitely one of those melt-in-your-mouth burgers! The gravy like sauce that accompanied the burger took the dish to a whole new level because it complimented the other elements of the dish so well.
However, it did feel like the bottom bun thinned out the more I ate from the burger, which made the process a bit messier than I would’ve preferred.
Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream – Rs. 490
The presentation of this dessert was on point! It was extremely pleasing to the eye and I couldn’t wait to try some!
I would’ve loved if it was a piping hot brownie but alas, we don’t always get what we want.
It was a bit too hard and at one point it started to taste a bit like what I imagine plastic would taste like. It was also frozen which is usually not how I like my brownies, so all in all, I wasn’t too pleased with it.
Tip: Try the Chicken Burger! It is really good!
