Ah Mexico. The land of tacos, burritos, and tequila! Mexican food is popularised due to its unique taste and amalgamation of flavours and textures which truly leave you craving for more. While Taco Bell is the obvious option in Sri Lanka for some Mexican food, there are a few more options to satisfy those very real Tex-Mex cravings. Some of these restaurants cater to the Mexican palate exclusively, while others serve up some fantastic Mexican dishes and fusion Tex-Mex cuisine. So, segregated below are exclusive Mexican restaurants along with restaurants with extensive menus which offer a few Mexican dishes, and also restaurants which provide Tex-Mex-inspired dishes.
Let’s start off with the most accessible and quickest way to get some great Mexican food in your tummy: Taco Bell. Three years ago, our cravings for authentic Mexican food were satisfied when the ever popular franchise opened up right here in Sri Lanka. Opening three branches (Horton Place, Marine Drive, and Mount Lavinia) since then, while maintaining standards, Taco Bell has always pleased their customers and it is no surprise that people still rush here for their Mexican fix. To this day, if I ever crave some gooey cheese, I opt for food from Taco Bell because let’s face it; they truly load up on the cheese on everything they offer!

King of the Mambo
Located at Galle Face Hotel, King of the Mambo is renowned for its Happy Hour promotions and Ladies’ Nights which really get the crowds flocking to its premises for amazing ambience and splendid food and drink. It should definitely be on your radar for a night out and also for incredible Mexican cuisine! Their Beef Rib Tacos were a hit with us and we are sure you will love it too! But why stop there? Try their cocktails poured in their uniquely themed glasses. The Black Mambo must be your go-to cocktail here for a truly authentic Mexican experience with a splash of tequila!

Dish to devour: Enchiladas
Although not an exclusively Mexican restaurant, the Barnesbury caters to the Mexican palate with yummy and gooey enchiladas. Baked to perfection, these enchiladas come in two varieties: Chicken and creamy fish. There’s a double spice warning on this dish so it is not for the faint hearted. However, with our Sri Lankan palates, coupled with insatiable hunger for some Mexican food, spice has got nothing on us. This would be a great option for when you are the only person within a group of friends craving Mexican, as The Barnesbury has got something for everyone thanks to its extensive menu.
91, Barnes Place, Colombo 7
Open time – 7am to 12 am (Sunday to Thursday), 7am to 1 am (Friday and Saturday)
Crossroads Café and Restaurant
Dishes to devour: Chicken Fajitas and Chicken Enchiladas
A Tasty Caterers establishment, Crossroads Café and Restaurant has a vast menu, leaving you spoilt for choice. Amidst this menu are two items which come highly recommended: Chicken Fajitas and Chicken Enchiladas. The former includes stir fried strips of chicken wrapped in a giant tortilla with guacamole, mixed beans, and sour cream, while the latter consists of grilled chicken topped with mozzarella, Mexican salsa, and tomato puree. Is your mouth watering yet? Cheesy Mexican goodness at an affordable price is what you get at Crossroads, so definitely stop by to satiate that hunger if you are in the vicinity!

Open time – 6.30am to 10pm
Star Mexican dish: Mexican Taco Salad
We at Pulse are constantly pleasantly surprised by how creative Sri Lankan businesses can be; always coming up with brilliant ideas. One such business is the holy grail of salads, Salad Maps, which essentially combines and layers ingredients specific to a particular type of cuisine and makes a salad out of said ingredients. Salad Maps offers country-specific “salads of the world”, and one such country is Mexico. Their Mexican Taco Salad is a must-try treat and is inclusive of tortilla chips, three types of cheese, peri peri chicken, lettuce, sweet corn, beans, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, and Mexican dressing! Need we say more? They deliver through Uber Eats and PickMe Food.
Open time – 10am to 7pm (Monday to Saturday)
Cricket Club Café
Star Mexican dishes: McCullum’s Mexican Wrap and Boundary Beef or Chicken Nachos
Although the Cricket Club Café offers a host of cricket-inspired dishes which we would love to rave about, our focus will be on the Mexican dishes they offer, which ooze of flavour and spice. The McCullum’s Mexican Wrap is a filling meal worth your buck and is probably one of the most value-for-money wraps you can find in Colombo. The Boundary Beef or Chicken Nachos is a multi-purpose dish which can act as either a rich and substantial meal for one or even a sharable dish among a couple of diners craving some hearty Tex-Mex. Opt for either beef or chicken; you really cannot go wrong because Cricket Club Café gets it right every time!
12, Flower Road, Colombo 7
Open time – 7.30am to 11.30pm
Playtrix Sports Bar and Café
Star Mexican dish: Full House Mexican Dog
One of my favourite places to dine at, Playtrix Sports Bar and Café, offers more than sizeable portions totally worth your buck. They are known for whipping up some amazing pub grub and their Full House Mexican Dog is no exception. This 12-inch-long bun is the perfect amalgamation of an American hot dog and the Mexican palate. Stuffed with garlic chicken sausages loaded with crushed nachos, jalapenos, fried onions, and oodles and oodles of melted cheese, this foot-long bun is an absolute treat! If you happen to be craving Mexican, or rather Mexican fusion at CCC, Playtrix is the perfect spot to catch a game, sip a beer, and satisfy those cravings.
So there you have it guys, a list of places you can get your Mexicano on! Take your pick and thank us later!
