Colombo’s “favorite bespoke baker”, Bakes by Bella, is back again with a bang in the form of the cutest little boutique you could imagine! This is her second outlet, much larger than the one at Liberty Arcade and much more accommodating. They serve sugar-coma inducing food for pretty upscale prices. We hopped by on a pretty warm evening to find the place teeming with cake-eaters and already pretty full up. All their décor seems to be custom made, with Bella on their paintings, coasters, and even their table numbers. Pretty wicked.
Food and Drinks
Drinks: Birthday Cake Shake Rs. 750, Iced Caramel Latte Rs. 550
We kicked off with the birthday cake shake because it was one of the most unique items on their blackboard menu.
We were pleasantly surprised to find that there were actual chunks of cake blended into the shake but it wasn’t too sweet at all. It was on the thicker side and was a very very large glass that could probably suffice for breakfast. Yum. It came topped with rainbow sprinkles and happiness.
The ice caramel latte was on point. Honestly. The flavor of coffee pulled through and the caramel gave it just the right amount of sweetness. It was topped off with the perfect amount of froth and was just what we needed to cool off on a warm Poya evening. Most favorite item from today.
Brunch options: Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon Rs. 1400
So the nice man in store today told us that they’ll be offering bagels and an all-day brunch menu come this weekend, but we wanted to check out what all the Instagram hype about these Eggs Benny were so we made sure to order the only savory thing on their menu for now.
You could get ‘em without the smoked salmon for Rs. 990, but we wanted it all! This item was such a show-stopper. The Benny was served with citrus mayo, buttermilk waffles, smoked salmon and pol sambol and made quite the combination. Tasting the elements individually, the waffles were a little dry and rubbery to me, but everything else was perfection. The eggs, albeit a little under seasoned, had a yolk that was still runny, the citrus mayo was fresh and very different to the usual hollandaise, the pol sambol was well, pol sambol, and the salmon was absolutely delicious. Combining everything together ensured a party in your mouth and I was a happy girl.
The portion was pretty damn hefty and could be shared between two if you were getting a drink too, and was worth the buck, we think.
Desserts: Smores Rs. 500
We were bursting to the brim with all this good food by now but we had to try Bella’s signature mini jars. The Smores came in a beautifully layered mini jar of diabetes and we almost couldn’t finish it.
The top layer was toasted marshmallows, followed by pure chocolate ganache and a biscuit crumble at the base. Though very delicious, this dish was way too rich to finish in one sitting. It was pretty messy to eat but taste wise, it fell nothing short of finger licking.
Dining at Bakes by Bella gives you a very personalized experience because the owners make sure to come and have a little chat with each one of their guests and ask them for feedback. The staff was very friendly and the service was fast, even though they were pretty jam-packed. I probably wouldn’t dine here on a daily basis for fear of heart failure and bankruptcy, but it’s a great place to treat yourself from time to time.
Tip: they don’t have their prices on their blackboard so try not to overspend, but make sure to try their Birthday Cake Shake!
