13 Horror Movies to Watch this Friday the 13th

by Aanisha Cuttilan

So it’s the first Friday the 13th of 2017 (mind you, there are quite a few coming up this year) and like any decent human being with slightly psychopathic tendencies, you’re planning on spending this wild Friday night with a few quality horror movies.

Yeah, yeah the Sri Lankan palette is tougher than most and we would probably yawn at an average jump scare so we decided to test the waters ourselves. So be it a marathon-party with friends or a solitary-spooked-out night, here’s a list of tried and tested, top 13 horror movies.

  1. It follows

Synopsis:‘doing the deed’ and horror movies have to have some kind of scientific correlation, I swear. This movie is centered around a supernatural entity that follows a young woman, after a one night stand with a stranger. This is why one must always use protection, kids. Carry around the pill. Or a priest.

  1. You’re Next

Synopsis: The Davison family, trapped in their own home by a trio of masked men, being murdered one by one. A fairly new movie, the scariest thing about “You’re Next” is that it could totally happen to anyone. Munch on that to keep the horrors alive.

  1. The Boy

Synopsis: You know that one white chick in a horror movie who thinks nothing weird will come out of a job that entails babysitting a life-size porcelain doll like it’s a real boy? Yeah, don’t be that chick cause shit’s about to hit the ceiling real fast.

An American nanny breaks the rules while babysitting the “son” of a rich British family and is quickly sent into a frenzy of unnerving events. Lots of “Budu Ammo” moments with an end that will leave you reeling.

  1. The Grudge

Synopsis: If there’s anything that can make most of us pee our pants, it’s a good ol’ Japanese horror film. The Grudge fully explains why us Sri Lankans should stop getting so pissed off all the time, basing its story around the Japanese saying that when a person dies in a fit of rage, a curse is left behind. And the curse will never forgive.

Rating: 10/10

  1. The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Synopsis: One of the classics. Unnaturally acrobatic college girls and lots of demonic speech, this movie is based on a true story and portrays a priest who tried to exorcise a young girl.
