If you ask any girl, she will tell you that getting a haircut is not a simple process; it is a long and emotional experience. After all, your hair is like the accessory you never take off, and needs to be protected at all costs. As such, there are a few stages that every girl goes through when getting a haircut. Let’s have a look at them below!

The Idea

You’re having a completely normal day when you suddenly come to the realization that you need a haircut – badly! Maybe you just saw a celebrity with an amazing new hairdo, maybe you’re experiencing a life crisis and you need a change, or maybe you just really want to rebel against your traditional parents who believe you need to have long hair. Either way, the realization is the same – you need a haircut!

Intense Research

You begin to conduct detective standard research in order to select your new hairstyle. You browse Pinterest for hours and get excited over every new thing you see. Eventually, you have a board with styles ranging from a pixie cut to a lob. In confusion, you ask your friends for their advice as well, even though you simply know you will end up doing what you want. Their mixed replies send you further into uncertainty.

Decision Making

The indecision has reached its peak! Your salon appointment is getting closer by the day, and you still haven’t picked. Eventually, after a passionate review of all your options, you choose one style. You nod to yourself, and begin to feel very confident with your decision. As an added bonus, you now have to explain this to your mother, who will definitely ask you many questions and increase your uncertainty.

Self Doubt

You reach the salon for your hair appointment and the hairdresser asks you for what you want. You pretend to consider her many suggestions, but eventually succumb and show her those select screenshots from your Pinterest board. As you begin to prepare for the haircut, self doubt sets in. What if the cut looks terrible on you? What if the hairdresser makes a mistake? What if you can’t pull it off? You start tapping your feet out of nervousness.

The Initial Shock

*Snip* The hairdresser makes the first cut. You stare at your detached hair in horror and watch it fall. You’ve definitely made the wrong choice, but it’s too late to turn back now. You’re in this for good. You close your eyes and pray for it all to be over soon.

Pretending to love it

Once the haircut is over, you stare at your newly cut hair in shock. The hairdresser will show smile, ask you whether you like it, and quite possibly show you the back of your head in a mirror as well. You will fake a forced, weak smile and tell her you absolutely love it. Then you will go home and cry.

The Obsession

You will reach home and immediately spend an unhealthy amount of time in front of the mirror, trying to decide how you feel about this. You will take selfies and send them to your friends. While trying to style it in every possible manner, you will experience mood swings, which will vary from deciding it doesn’t look too bad, to realizing you need to spend the next few months wearing a hat at all times.

The Comments

As is expected, your friends and family will find it impossible to stop commenting on your hair. Your friends will reassure you and tell you that it looks great and they love it. Meanwhile, your aunts will experience more stages than you did, beginning with shock, confusion, disbelief and ending with a few thoughtful comments. Every girl will have to listen to ten aunties telling her how beautiful her long hair was, and that ‘it’s okay, this looks fine too’. An added bonus is the inclusion of the renowned ‘Look at girls these days’.

Growing to love it

A week later, your obsession has died down a bit. Your hair has grown out ever so slightly. You look at yourself in the mirror and suddenly realize how great you look. This haircut is fantastic, and you wonder why you ever doubted yourself. You begin to experiment with it more, and fall in love with your fabulous locks.
