Why Lanka Should Be On Your Travel Bucket List

2016 Sep 27

Ah, Sri Lanka; how thou art abundant in warm sandy beaches, exotic wildlife and foliage in the lush up-country region.

We, in Lanka, dream of leaving home to travel the world; go to breath-taking destinations like Maldives, Vietnam, Italy, France, Hawaii and the list goes on and on. But before embarking on a ‘Around The World In 80 Days’ inspired journey, you may want to start in our spectacular native land; be a tourist in your country.

Let me shed some light on why Lanka should be on your travel bucket list.

For starters, Forbes magazine placed Sri Lanka on its list of “The Ten Coolest Places To Visit”, and that is an immense honor. They expressed that the main draw of the lion nation is our wildlife. “We can’t think of another country that has the variety of experiences that Sri Lanka does,” they added. For this purpose, renowned parks Yala and Wilpattu were also praised.

In a nutshell, you need to travel The Pearl because of the reason below;

The monumental Ruwanwelisaya stupa and the 1900 stone elephants that surround it, the tree that evolved from a branch of the Bodhi Tree, the tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment, all of which are awe-inspiring sights.

The Rock Temple of Dambulla is worth the climb up for its five caves showcasing 150 Buddha images, which have lasted for thousands of years.

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage just outside Kandy, where over a 100 orphan jumbos are in residence. Sri Lankan elephants are a very contributory reason to why tourism in our country is peaking.

Galle Fort with its amazing architecture and vintage feel that lingers around the little brick laid land.

Even UK’s “The Telegraph” made known 23 reasons why Sri Lanka should be visited and among those reasons was the cricket in Galle, the art-filled caves, the “impossibly scenic” trains, the hoppers, tea in Nuwara Eliya, surfing at Arugam Bay, the “good looking rocks”, the kite festivals and because it is South-east Asia at its most chilled.

Sri Lanka is also an ultimate chill spot thanks to the relaxing Ayurveda and spas. Our country has been a nucleus of spiritual and physical healing for 2,000 years. As far as Ayurveda goes, there is a range of herbal treatments and various types of baths and massages, together with cleansing and revitalization techniques such as yoga, meditation and special diets that indefinitely rejuvenate the body and mind.

If you are seeking an adventure, trust me, you should start from your roots. Lanka is an ideal location for wind-surfing, water-skiing, surfing, sailing,scuba-diving (including wreck-diving), snorkelling, speed-boating and banana-boating. Since there are numerous rivers, lagoons, lakes and what not, there are plentiful opportunities for year-round kayaking and canoeing with, maybe, even a camping trip.

My best bet for an adventure would be white water rafting in Kitulgala. The adrenaline rush, combined with a weirdly good kind of fear, is something you need to do within the span of your life.

And don’t even get me started on the food. Oh, the spicy, mouth watering food. Hoppers, string hoppers, pittu, pol roti, seeni sambol, pol sambol, tempered potato, kottu, rice and curry, lamprais, wade. Need I go on?

Even the fruits like mango, banana, pineapple and papaya are delectables you can’t miss out on.

So before you embark on a journey outside our beautiful nation, explore Sri Lanka first. It’ll definitely surprise you!
