Sage Singer, a baker, and 90-year-old Josef Weber, are unlikely friends. Then Josef asks her for a favor – to help him die – because he used to be a Nazi. What he doesn’t know is that Sage’s grandmother is a Holocaust survivor.

Picoult’s books are always a riveting read. However, this particular novel sits out from the rest. As is her style, she examines many moral dilemmas and deals with heavy topics. As she examines the life of a Nazi soldier and a young Jewish girl, set in Nazi Germany, she proves that there is more to people than meets the eye. Once again, Picoult doesn’t fail to deliver with her trademark twist at the end (no spoilers, I promise!

The flow of writing makes it interesting to read and impossible to put down, as it examines the manner in which the lives of such unlikely individuals interconnect unknowingly. It gives us a fresh insight into the terrible reign of Hitler in Germany, as it portrays the events through a capturing narrative, rather than a history lesson. This book is definitely enlightening and most importantly, enjoyable.
